Grammy-nominated saxophonist and flutist Lew Tabackin is a jazz icon celebrated for his electrifying flute work and hard bop tenor style. A longtime DownBeat poll winner, he co-led the award-winning Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra with his wife, pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi. He has played with jazz legends including Cab Calloway, Maynard Ferguson, and Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, while also leading numerous acclaimed small groups — most notably his trio with Boris Kozlov and Mark Taylor.
Tabackin’s early career included stints with Donald Byrd, Elvin Jones, and the Doc Severinsen Band, as well as a role in The Dick Cavett Show’s studio orchestra. After meeting Akiyoshi in 1968, the two married and launched their iconic big band in Los Angeles. There, he also worked with Shelley Manne, Billy Higgins, and Charlie Haden. In the 1980s, Tabackin earned widespread recognition for his flute artistry, and since moving to New York in 1982, he has remained a major force on the jazz scene.
Lew Tabackin – Sax; Boris Kozlov – Bass; Jason Tiemann – Drums
